Emma Bross head shot

Hi! I’m Emma, a UX/UI designer based in Washington, DC.

We deserve digital experiences that work with us instead of against us. I have a passion for improving people’s well-being through user-centered design. I aim to make experiences seamless and enjoyable by designing with empathy.

My most recent work includes designing a financial health mobile app. Working on a small startup team, I’ve developed a knack for ideating with others. My natural curiosity leads me to ask deeper questions that contribute to well-rounded discussions. One such question is, "How do we nudge people toward financial health while making them feel supported?"

Sero! Learn

Sero! is an educational app that uses concept mapping as an assessment tool. Instructors build concept maps, turn them into assessments, assign them to students, and view student results. Students take their assessments, see how they performed, and create concept maps of their own. The three projects below show some of my contributions to the user experience.

Redesign and UI Library

Early prototypes for Sero! lacked focus and flow and were visually overwhelming. I aimed to organize UI elements in a way that would be easy to access and update in the future.

Authoring Process

The most interaction-dense part of Sero! is the process of authoring assessments. I aimed to strengthen my mental model of the authoring process and identify areas with room for improvement.

Design Revisions

I noticed several places where users might struggle with the app. I made three design revisions with the goal of improving the usability of the authoring process.

Earlier Projects

StudySnap

Capstone project in Springboard UX Design course

Suzanne Collins Website Redesign

Wireframing exercise in HackCville Web Design course

Lynchburg, VA Urban Proposal

Studio Project in UVA's School of Architecture

StudySnap

Capstone project in Springboard UX Design course

Few existing study tools seem to address the wide variety of study methods that students use. I explored how to bundle the most common study methods into a single tool to reduce the number of separate study materials and increase student focus.

Suzanne Collins Website Redesign

Wireframing exercise in HackCville Web Design course

At the time of this project, Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins was using a simple HTML design for her website. The goal of this exercise was to improve Collins’ site by designing wireframes for three different pages or features.

Lynchburg, VA Urban Proposal

Studio Project in UVA's School of Architecture

After exploring Lynchburg and documenting its urban life, my team and I brainstormed ways to improve it. My design for a mixed-use complex aims to increase social and economic connectivity in order to encourage a more lively atmosphere.

Experience

Education

University of Virginia

I studied Architecture and Cognitive Science at University of Virginia. This unique combination got me interested in how form and function shape our emotions – both in person and online.

Cognitive Science Major

Cognitive Science is an interdisciplinary program focused on how the mind works. I studied five core subjects: cognitive psychology, philosophy, computer science, neuroscience, and linguistics. Through my major I gained a research skill set, learned how to code, and gained more insight into the human experience.

Architecture Minor

Architecture school is where I got my start in design. There I worked with teammates to solve problems in the built environment. I sketched and diagrammed ideas, built physical and digital models, and presented work to a faculty review board.

Work

UX/UI Designer, Perigean Technologies

Perigean is a "small but mighty" research and design company focused on improving cognitive performance. My role includes UI design, UX writing, product management, user testing, and video content creation.

UX Researcher, The Wardrobe Essentialist

The Wardrobe Essentialist is an e-commerce startup that recommends work attire to young professionals. To gather feedback on the onboarding process, I planned and conducted usability testing sessions. For another project I wrote, designed, and coded emails for subscribers.
